Jailbreak from Holloway planned for March 3rd
Article by Ethan Lawrence
“Tonight, there’s going to be a jailbreak, somewhere in this town.” Thus spoke Thin Lizzy many years ago. While the meaning may have become slightly contorted over the ages, the power behind the term is no less prophetic. While the majesty of Miss Lizzy’s lyrics inspired the image of thousands of convicts flooding the streets and having a good old headbang, the meaning today is an excellent charity activity that is being launched by the RAG team here at Royal Holloway.
The event, scheduled for the end of RAG week on March 3rd, is set to redefine what can be done to raise money for worthy causes. Deployed in conjunction with the Kilimanjaro mountain climb in the summer term, it allows people to generate cash without the terrible side effect of altitude sickness. By raising just thirty pounds through sponsorship money, anyone can get involved in this worthwhile event.
A Jailbreak (according to its modern definition rather than Thin Lizzy’s one) is a well recognised charity event that occurs all over Britain, in which participants attempt to get as far away as possible from their starting point. Sounds simple, right? Unfortunately, the kicker that makes it such a challenge is that no access to vehicles or assistance from friends or money is permitted. The travel is performed by hitching alone. The simple act of raising a thumb is all you have. Oh, and thirty-six hours. There’s a time limit as well.
However, there is hope! Previous attempts have seen students from here in the UK reach as far as Thailand or Canada. To make this kind of achievement more feasible, those taking part are armed with a Jailbreak certificate which acts like an all purpose ticket for trains, buses and even planes. For the protection of participants, tracking devices and a hotline are used to prevent any disasters occurring.
This could be your chance to prove that Royal Holloway students are the most resourceful and adventurous in the UK. There will be meetings on January 30th and February 8th, about which more details can be found online .
Want to make Holloway proud? Jailbreak.
