If you’re one of the many hundreds of new students at Royal Holloway in 2010/11, you might be interested in what Insanity is all about and what we do.

Look no further! Click to read on for a summary of Insanity and what we do, and how you can get involved in what promises to be an absolutely pivotal year for the station!

Update: We’ll be in the Windsor building on Tuesday and Wednesday of Fresher’s Week, and the station will be open to all in Queens Annexe all day every day of Freshers!

Insanity Radio was founded many years ago, taking it’s name from the Holloway Sanatorium, founded by the same Holloway who founded the college.

The past few years, we’ve broadcast on AM and online under a long term restricted services license. But in February 2010, Ofcom awarded Insanity a community radio license, permitting us to broadcast on FM as well as a community station – an opportunity few student radio stations are ever given. We’re still working through the licensing requirements for FM, but hope to have our transmitter operational soon – and we’re still broadcasting on 1287 AM as well as online in a variety of formats.

So this year in particular we’re really looking to raise the bar in our program quality, variety and relevance, as well as setting high standards for ourselves technically. We’re looking for presenters and producers, people interested in the technical aspect of running a fully fledged radio station, and more!

We love to get freshers involved with the station and welcome everyone who wants to help out and learn. To help you find us, we’ll be running a stand at the Fresher’s Fair (Look for the big Insanity logo!) – come and find us, say hello, and put your name down if you’re even slightly interested. If you want to DJ, you can apply for a show already – just look for the forms on our website and send them in! We have all sorts of shows – news, chat, chart music, genre music shows, breakfast shows, Student’s Union warm up shows, even the occasional DJ mixing music on air! You don’t need any prior experience – we’ll train you and help you out for the first few shows you do.

It’s not all about what goes on the air – we also have teams of people working on promoting the station, on securing marketing and advertising promotions with external companies to help finance the station, and not to mention working to put together the many events at the Student’s Union and bars on campus that Insanity runs regularly throughout the year, with our own DJs providing the music! News will be playing a large part this year, so if you want to help interview people, write and record summaries, and more, then pop along and let us know!

And of course this is just the tip of the iceberg – website updates, jingle, sweeper and advert production, outside broadcasts, music procurement and rating, there’s a lot to do and lots of opportunities – and remember, as well as being a shedload of fun, having Insanity on your CV can be the edge you need to get into commercial broadcast media!

Applications have just opened for 2010/11 and anyone can apply- read on to find out how!

Update 8th August: We’ve had a lot of entries in already, so if you haven’t yet submitted your application, send it in as soon as possible!

Many people apply every year to Insanity, so it’s important to get your application in early. Some things to bear in mind:

Groups of presenters looking to do one show should send in one form per group.

All applicants will be expected to give at least one hour of their time in Fresher’s Week to help Insanity.

Applicants who do not volunteer in Fresher’s Week and who do not give notice as to why they cannot will not be considered for interview.

If you’re still interested fill out the short application form, which can be downloaded from here: Insanity Presenter Application 2010-11

You will need OpenOffice or Microsoft Word to open the application form (OpenOffice is free, so if you don’t have Office and don’t want to shell out for it, you can use that instead)

Once you’ve filled out the form, send it in to Gunanika Singh, Insanity’s Programme Controller, via email: insanityprogrammecontroller at su.rhul.ac.uk

Those of you following events with the recent executive board elections will already be aware that last Tuesday at the general meeting, a vote was held with the final result of 21 for 22 against or abstained, to ratify those elections, which did not reach the constitutional 10% quota for automatic ratification. This means amongst other things that Insanity’s new station manager and assistant station manager (Charlie Pagliero and Sarah Honeycombe) have not been voted in, and those positions will remain vacant until the by-election at the end of next term.

This has caused some controversy and as such, over 50 people have signed to request an emergency general meeting be held, which will happen tomorrow, the 26th of March, at 3PM in the Student’s Union main hall.

The general meeting will be focusing on the issue of ratification of the elections, so come along if you want to make sure your opinion is heard. It shouldn’t take long, and a strong turnout will help make sure any decision made is in the interests of the student body.
